わしが住むヨークでは、7月はガーデンにとって大抵一番いい時なんじゃが、今年は天気が変わり易くてそうでもない。今日は暑いけど、この2，3日は、冬の支度でガーデニングしていたんじゃよ。

7月は、コンテナやハンギングバスケットの水切れに注意すること。　
ほかのガーデナー達と同じようにわしも、屋根に落ちた雨水をためていてそれを使っておるよ。

花壇の花たちの花期を長くするために花ガラ摘みは欠かせない。　
わしはスイートピーが好きなんじゃが、定期的に切り戻したり、栄養を上げたり、つるを支柱に止めたり外したりっていう作業がある。
そして7月は、芝に栄養を与えるにも良い季節じゃよ。そしてもちろん、病害虫にも目が離せん。素早い対応が必要じゃからの。

ストロベリーもようやく育ってきたから、泥がつかないように藁を敷いたり、鳥に食べられないようにネットを張ったり。
毎日少しずつ収穫して楽しんでおる。

この季節には、多くの生産者がカタログを発行するから、わしは、来春用の花と球根のカタログを注文した。楽しみじゃ。

July is usually one of our best months. But this year it has been very changeable. Today is hot, but the last few days I was gardening in my winter clothes!

My jobs for July include:

Keeping and eye on my containers and hanging baskets to make sure they don't dry out. Like many English gardeners, we collect our water from the rain falling on the roof of the house. We use water butts, to collect the water from the downpipes.

Lots of dead heading for my bedding plants and flowering perennials to make sure they flower for longer.

I love sweet peas and they need regular cutting, feeding, tying in and removal of tendrils.

It's also the best month to give the lawn a quick acting summer feed.

As always, keep an eye out for any pests and diseases in the garden and treat promptly.

Our strawberries are starting to grow so I have to cover them with netting to protect them from birds, put lots of straw around the plants to keep the strawberries off the soil and of course pick them every day to enjoy with dinner.

In July the following year's catalogues are issued by all of the major growers. I order catalogues now for next years spring-flowering bulbs.
