バックガーデンはほとんどがスロープになっていて、ガーデニングするのには多少の制限があるので、ポールは、４つのレベルに分けたんだそうだ。
パティオ、砂利のグラベル・ガーデン、ロックガーデン、そしてワイルドライフ・ガーデンの四つだよ。

The Back Garden.

The rear garden slopes throughout most of its length, which can present a challenge and limits some of the gardening options. Paul has divided it into four levels. The patio, a gravel garden, a rockery and a wildlife garden.

パティオの一段上は、もともとは小さな芝庭だったんだけど、ポールは真っ白な砂利を750㎏も入れて、ヤシのコンテナを並べ、ピケット・フェンスという柵を取り付けたんだそうだよ。

The level above the rear patio, was formerly a small piece of lawn. In order to improve this area, he decided to in-fill with about 750kg of bright white gravel, finished it off with potted palms surrounded it with a picket fence.

更にその上は、砂質土壌で排水性がすこぶる良いこともあって、バースのライムストーンという自然石を使い、ちょっとしたロックガーデンを作って30種類のアルパイン・プランツを植えたんだって。

ロックガーデンには、装飾的なセラミクスのミツバチの巣を加えていて面白いね。

Above this area, he planted a rockery with natural "Bath" limestone rocks bought locally and about 30 alpine plants. These plants require a light sandy soil and lots of drainage which is why he decided on this solution. The rockery has the addition of decorative stoneware bee-hives.

そして一番上のエリアは、ワイルドライフ・フレンドリーな庭にすることに決めたんだそうだよ。
ブラックベリーや雑草に覆われていたところを、1トンもの客土をして、春に咲く花の種や500球もの球根を植えたんだから大変だっただろうね。
この庭は、蝶や蜂や自然の生き物が遊びに来るのを促すようにデザインされている。

At the uppermost part of the garden, he decided to create a wildlife friendly area which has been cleared of brambles and weeds and replaced with about a tonne of topsoil and compost and about 500 bulbs and seeds which will flower next Spring. This is designed to encourage butterflies, bees and other wildlife. Photo shows the area under construction.
